Section R of the SIC 7 covers arts, entertainment and recreation, with 13 SIC codes describing the creative, cultural, sporting and leisure activities that enrich life in South Africa. The section includes creative, arts and entertainment activities such as performing arts, artistic creation and operation of arts facilities; libraries, archives, museums and other cultural activities; gambling and betting activities; sports activities; and amusement and recreation activities such as theme parks, gyms and fairgrounds.

The codes are grouped into divisions 90 to 93. Each SIC code page on the site provides the official Stats SA description, the parent division, the SETA allocation — primarily CATHSSETA (Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport SETA) — and links to related OFO occupation codes and NQF qualifications for performers, artists, sports coaches, fitness instructors, museum curators and event managers.

Use Section R when registering a creative, sport or entertainment business with CIPC, applying for a National Gambling Board licence, registering with the Performers Protection Act bodies, submitting workplace skills plans to CATHSSETA, claiming the Film and Television Production Incentive, or preparing the Tourism / Sports B-BBEE scorecards.

Whether you run a theatre, an art gallery, a sports club, a casino, a gym, a music festival or a film production company, Section R provides the correct SIC reference and connects it to the wider regulatory, funding and skills framework of South Africa’s creative and recreation industries.
